A Few Thoughts Before Bed
posted Saturday, 5 August 2006

Again, I find myself somewhat at loose ends coming up with something to write about. So, I'll just ramble awhile, before heading to bed.
Work was a clusterfuck tonight - we were busier than a one legged man in a butt kicking contest. It's "Mother's Week"; that is, welfare check week. At the beginning of each month our business spikes as welfare recipients always order pizza when they get their checks. I can't understand that. If I were on welfare and only had a few free dollars to spend on myself each month, I certainly wouldn't be spending it on pizza, which is more than one of the more expensive fast foods. I'd want to buy something that I'd get to use more than once, as food is, to put it crudely, shit waiting to happen.
And it probably was the hottest day yet this summer; on the radio the heat index was reported to be 110. If it were me, I'd not be wanting hot food -- I'd rather eat cold cuts in this kind of weather. Nevertheless, I was busy from the moment I hit the door, and the ubiquitous evening thundershower only served to make us even busier. The weather tomorrow is supposed to be a duplicate of today's weather, and we're going to be shorthanded tomorrow, so I can only expect a repeat of tonight.
I've been having a lot of wild dreams lately. They common theme in the dreams is that I'm on the go, always vaguely looking for something. In last night's dream, I was back on the police force, promoted to detective. I can remember driving around with another detective, but it wasn't clear what we were looking for. In another dream I was in bed asleep, when I heard a commotion downstairs and when I went down there I found my father having a heart attack. That dream was so disturbing that it woke me up out of a sound sleep. In another dream, I'm in Germany, in a library that suddenly turns into a mall bookstore, where I ask where the books in English are.
My primary lover started back to school on Thursday, again teaching the third grade. She's not ready to go back; she was enjoying the opportunity to spend more time with me. In my opinion, I think it's too early to start school. When I went to school, we never started until after Labor Day. To start in the hottest part of the summer seems stupid -- no one wants to be there when it's that hot outside, neither the students nor the teachers. Of course, all schools are air-conditioned now, but I can't see that making a whole lot of difference.
Well, I managed to squeak out an entry; now I'm dragging my ass to bed.
