For quite some time now, I've been unhappy with the interactivity level at Blog City. Hit levels have dropped and, more importantly, the comment level has dwindled. It hadn't always been this way. This time last year, both the traffic and comment levels were high. Then around the beginning of 2007, it all inexplicably went away.
Part of it, I'm sure, is because several of the regular bloggers in what I considered my core blogging circle have fell away, one by one. First, Mr Bob, who was the original linchpin of the blogging circle, stopped blogging because of health concerns. Then, Easy, another popular blogger, stopped because of family concerns. Big John and Longrider moved to other blogging sites and Rosebud simply disappeared into the ether, with nary a look behind. The popular Coffee and Varnish blog has likewise fallen by the wayside. Several other semi-regular visitors have also vanished. Out of what was once a thriving little niche in the Blog City community, only Paula Reed and John Sherck are still blogging regularly, with Pimme now down to only occasional posts.
For nearly two years, I've been keeping another blog, a "shadow" of this one, over at EFX2 com. Unlike Blog City, the interactivity level there is high, it's easier to make an attractive looking blog there, and, best of all, it's free.
I'd been turning it over in my head to let this blog lapse when my renewal time comes in November. Let's face it, I'm a comment whore, and to continue paying for a blog where comments are dwindling didn't make a whole lot of sense. But a few things lately have made me reconsider that.
EFX has had some stability issues recently; in the last month, it's gone down for more than 24 hours twice for no apparent reason. Blog-City, on the other hand, is a stable site that I can count on to be up and running consistently.
Second, I've noticed a slight upswing in hits and comment in the last month or so. Perhaps this trend will continue to previous levels.
Lastly, I've got over a half million hits on this blog. I've invested a lot of myself into it and I'm rather proud of what I've accomplished. I want to stick around and get a million hits.
So, I'll be staying with Blog City for the forseeable future, though I'll continue at EFX as well, which should satiate the comment whore in me.
So we may consider this your "primary blog" with some EFX on the side?
LOL at Paula's comment! I'm glad to hear that you're sticking around
W....I've enjoyed your blog from the first day I ever found it.
well i hope you keep this one indefinitely. as you know i'm not welcome
'over there'. i do keep up but just not much of a commenter. hey, least i
contribute to traffic. heh...stay put and keep posting, k? thanks.
As my Blog-City site is coming due in just over a week, I was having a
similar internal struggle. Fewer commenters and readers on the one hand and
what seems to be more expensive blogging on the other (or maybe my memory
is failing, but I didn't remember paying so much...). I've been considering
migrating to a new site (but it seems like it would be tough to move
everything) or hanging it up altogether (though it's become such a part of
my life that I'm not sure I could quit). Probably I'll re-up for another
year and see after that.
