Erotic Art From Pompeii
After reading a historical novel about the last two days of Pompeii in 79 AD, I went to Wikipedia to learn more about this Roman town and the volcanic eruption that buried it.
While reading the article there, it was mentioned that quite a bit of erotic art was found when the town was excavated, indicating that libertine attitudes were quite common, almost to the point of ubiquity, during the Roman era.
As I know very little about this time period, I'll let the art speak for itself:

How interesting is that? I've never read anything about Pompeii but always
thought it would be interesting to read more on. I guess I'll have to.
Interesting. Kind of makes me wish I'd made the trip to Pompeii on one of
my Italian journey. Those could have been good discussion pieces to meet
fellow travellers...
I always find ancient erotic art very interesting to view. It just goes to
show that not much has changed.
There are young and old alike who always question the necessity of learning
history. Amazing how human nature actually never changes and history
repeats it's self in every form. As always, good post. :-)
I remember being a child and having dinner at friend's of my parents. They
just returned from Pompeii. Their stories had me spellbound.
I seem to recall reading that the art often depicted the master of the
house, boasting the size and virility of the head of the house, as it were.
Some of the ancient Egyptian stuff was pretty explicit, too. The ancients
weren't averse to a little porn.
