Making People Think

posted Thursday, 14 September 2006
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The other day, I posted an entry about my periodic bouts with writer's block.  One person commented, making a reference to my "self-imposed obligation to entertain".

This response stuck in my craw as the main goal of this blog isn't to "entertain" people.

Though I write about a wide variety of topics, some of them which are indeed entertaining, this blog's raison d'etre is to make people see things in a new light; I want to make people think.   As my blog's subtitle indicates, my goal is to get people to consider things in ways they might not have before -- to think outside the box, to color outside the lines.

I especially like writing about controversial topics, about supposedly inviolate sacred cows.  I enjoy the lively exchange of comments that usually follows such an entry -- I know I've done my job if I've struck a nerve.

I don't expect people to always end up agreeing with me, far from it.  It is enough to expose people to unconventional ways of thinking about things and to have them entertain such thoughts, regardless of the conclusions they ultimately draw.

Thoughts?

Interesting. I think about why I blog, often, and I try to keep it for me. I've spent my whole adult life putting others first and my blog is my one place where it can all be about me. I try not to apologize for not blogging when I go a long time between posts, although I end up doing it any way. It all comes down to interaction, I think, and I love the interaction based on ideas, rather than gender or age or socioeconomic status, or even geography. I say it often, because I think it often, it's a great time to be alive! We're all glad you blog to make us think, W. You succeed at that. :)

I must agree with Selkie. The most interesting blogs to me are those that invoke you to think and see things in a different light. Keep on blogging!

I started blogging to try to make people think about authoritarianism in government policy, It was very much a protest blog at conception. It's broadened since then; almost immediately, in fact. Sometimes I still try to get people thinking, sometimes it's pure entertainment. My photo blog and Felix Domesticus are very much about entertainment. Longrider blog remains very much political, consumer and deep thinking stuff... for the most part.

I don't worry too much if I don't have inspiration - I just don't write that day. Something will come along, it always does.

Well, I've thought about it, but I disagree: that's not at all why you blog.

Sorry, just thought you wanted a little disagreement.

Actually, I was reminded of something I heard somewhere: "Sacred cows make the best hamburger." So keep grinding them down and we'll have us some good mental eatin' at your blog.

I was the one who said it - without expecting you to read anything into it... it was nothing more than an attempt at being funny, referring to your insistence on blogging every single day, and in my mind, thought-provoking and entertaining are overlapping, not opposing categories. I certainly wasn't trying to insult you and I apologize if it came across this way.

I love your blog. It is the one thing I know will be there every day! I started my blog after a friend told me about blogging. Now it has become sort of like my cyber "Cheers"...A place where you can go to discuss things, hang out and chat and everyone knows your name. I like your blog just the way it is.....even when the subjects sometime go over my head!

When I started blogging, you got to choose three categories in which to be listed, so I chose "humor", "rant" and "music". Well, some days I blog about none of the above, so people will just have to be understanding! ;^)

I find that if something strikes a nerve within me then whether I like it or not, there's a lesson for me contained there.
