Thanks to Florida State Senator Jim King, pet owners in Florida may soon be allowed to be buried with the ashes of their beloved pets when they die. The Senate voted for the measure 38-1 on Tuesday, sending the bill to the governor.
Current laws in most parts of the United States mandate that licensed cemeteries contain only human remains. Pet cemeteries exist, but are strictly separate from those for humans.
I've never understood this. It seems to be a simple thing to honor a person's request to be buried with the remains of a beloved pet. I see no logical reason to ban this. Some might say it's a health issue, but that's ludicrous -- people buried in cemeteries are DEAD, fer cryin' out loud. As long as the pet's remains are cremated or in a coffin of its own, it's no different to me than being buried in close proximity to a human family member.
I hope the other states will soon follow Florida's example and abolish the ridiculous laws that prevent humans and their beloved pets from sharing the same resting place.
When I hear about laws like these and consider the amount of time
government spends on them, it isn't any wonder why this country is a mess.
What could possibly be the harm in sharing a grave with a pet? I read an
article about a couple who want to pass a law for pets to be considered
legal dependents eligible for tax deductions. I can see that being abused
terribly.
Are the pets expected to jump onto the funeral pyre of their owner?
