First off, let me state that I'm no fan of legal, government-approved marriage. As I've stated before, I don't think it's the government's business to interfere in people's private intimate relationships, nor do I believe that people ought to be granted or denied certain benefits and privileges based on their relationship status.
That being said, I offer my sincere congratulations to all the gay and lesbian couples being married from this day forward in the state of Massachusetts and wish them all happy, successful unions. Though I take a dim view of government sanctioned marriage, I also believe that as long as it exists and contiues to confer benefits on those who enter into it, that it is only right and proper that it be equally available to all, regardless of sexual orientation. I also believe it should be available to multiple partner unions, but I'll not go further into that today.
As a heterosexual, it is far easier for me to turn my back on legal marriage, as it has always been available to me should I ever decide differently. Today, in Massachusetts and a very few other places at least, lesbian and gay couples will also have that same opportunity. And I'm glad of it.
