Trust in Intimate Relationships

posted Tuesday, 5 September 2006

Tonight, I turned the radio dial again, looking for some blogging fodder.  And I wasn't disappointed, either.

I turned to the Delilah show, as she was taking a request from a male caller.   He'd been dumped by his girlfriend and wanted a song played to persuade her to come back to him.

When Delilah asked him what he'd done to be dumped, he told her that his girlfriend had been using his computer and had been going through the history file, where she found a picture of another woman.  This picture wasn't anyone he knew personally; it was from a website and had been sent to him by a friend through email.  It wasn't even a pornographic picture; it was "PG" in the caller's words.   He said he was very sorry for what he'd done and wanted to get the chance to apologize to her and make it up to her!

Delilah said she'd done stuff like that, too; and had even gone through men's wallets and cell phones.

WTF??

For one thing, is this man the biggest wimp who ever walked the planet or what?   It is the woman who should be apologizing to him for not trusting him and for invading his privacy.  Her snooping and jealous overreaction was totally uncalled for.

As for Delilah and other women like her, I'd not tolerate such deceitful behavior from a lover.  Invading my privacy and spying on me behind my back is a complete relationship breaker for me.
A relationship not built on trust is no relationship at all.  If a woman wants to know something about me, all she needs to do is come to me directly and ask.  I tell my lovers right up front that I see others; they don't need to go through my wallet to find that out.  I've never put up with jealous women and I'm not about to start now.

Thoughts?

Oh yes, leave it to old Delilah to say that she's gone through wallets and cell phones, this doesn't shock me coming from her.

If you don't have trust in a relationship, you don't really have a relationship. Trust is what everything else in a relationsihp is built on, and once that trust is gone, it never comes back.

Yes, this guy shouldn't be apologizing to her, the woman should be apologizing to him for what she's done. He needs to stand up for himself.

Why don't people ever get relationship advice from the right places? We could all tell him what a doofus he is! Seriously, what does this guy think he's apologizing for? Having a picture on his computer? If he gets her back, next week he'll be calling in to play a song to apologize for letting his eyes glance at another woman. The next song he calls in to request should be Beck's "Loser."

the guy sounds like a doormat and the woman like a psycho. the host should have told him they both need to get help.

Too many go through life never knowing what a real relationship is all about.

Jealousy issues...ugh. I know this all too well, but doesn't everyone? I value my privacy, and if it is violated, you had better believe I channel the uber-bitch. I agree with Catty...*chuckle*

I believe trust is the most important part of a relationship. If you don’t have trust you don’t have anything. My husband and I trust each other completely. Although it some times would be nice if he showed a little jealousy, but I think that is an ego thing not a trust issue.

first of all, there is a fine line between curiousity and downright invasion. whatever you see, whatever you doubt, simply ask--that's curiousity. invasion is when you disregard their privacy and their reasons for not telling you.

jealousy...one of the ugliest human flaws. not to do psycho-babble here, but jealousy entails a sense of possession. and the truth is that none of us can ever own another person, or should ever attempt to. love and relationships are precious partly because one has (or should have) the freedom to leave anytime...but chooses to stay.
