So, when the third waves of layoffs began, he got a phone call one day telling him he no longer had a job. Just like that.
He will get a small severance package, but it won’t go very far. He is fortunate that he is eligible to get the largest weekly unemployment amount our state offers, but even that may not be assured. I recenty heard in the news that a Republican state Senator has introduced legislation that would bar those laid off workers receiving severance packages from their companies from collecting unemployment benefits at the same time.
Never mind that the current state unemployment rate is over ten percent and he’ll be very lucky if he finds a job at all after both the severance and the unemployment money runs out, let alone one at the same salary he was getting before.
I can only hope the legislation does not pass, or if it does, it will only affect those in higher income brackets and/or only affect new claims for unemployment, not those already getting it.
I’ve urged him to move back in with me, as he’d be able to make his money last longer than way and also be able to help me with bills, as hours at my job have been reduced as well. He is reluctant to do so, which I would understand perfectly if the economy was healthy, but as it is, I think its ridiculous to spend any money he doesn’t have to spend by throwing away what little he has on rent.
It’s going to be a tough year all aro
I don't get it. Republicans who wont spend or accept money from the
stimulus bill and create other obstacles on unemployment benefits. Do they
ever think they might be viewed as Marie Antoinette and suffer similar
consequences.
Your son is lucky to have an old man who watches out for him. I'll be
living with family this summer, which is horrifying for a dude closer to 40
than 30, but times are tough.
He's lucky to have you able and willing to help him out. Sorry he lost his
job but he'd be wasting money if he didn't take you up on your offer to let
him move in with you while he looks for something new.
I'm sorry to hear this, W. These are hard times.
I'm sorry to hear about both of your job situations. It sure does seem
like the politicians enjoy heaping the hardships on the little guy. Here
in PA you are allowed to claim unemployment benefits for reduced work
hours. Is that possible for you there?
