Update: Mandatory Evacuation

posted Sunday, 2 October 2005

Several days ago, I wrote about an online friend who had to evacuate from her home in southeast Texas because of Hurricane Rita. I'm happy to say that Cynter is safe, and has contacted several of her internet friends to let us know she is OK.

That being said, her evacuation experience was a nightmare. First of all, she and her special needs daughter spent 35 hours on an overcrowded, hot school bus, driving from Beaumont, Texas to the Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas. Those aboard were required to relieve themselves in the woods when the bus periodically stopped by the side of the road for this purpose.

At one point in the journey, they stopped at a convenience store so that evacuees could buy needed items. A mini-riot broke out when the store ran out of stock, leaving some people empty handed.

Reunion Arena has provided shelter for hundreds of evacuees, with cots set up in a stadium setting. Because this facility was not designed to be used for such a purpose, shower and toilet time has had to be arranged in advance, which threatens to overtax the plumbing system.

Cyn reports that her autistic daughter has had "adjustment issues", and is continually asking to go home.

At last word, Cynter is still there, not having been given a firm date to return home. An online friend from Modblog, who lives in the Dallas area, has offered to pick Cyn up to run needed errands and to get a break from the shelter, while she waits to go home.

I know she'll be glad to get home and put this ordeal behind her.

Cynter really puts a human face on the whole hurricane experience nightmare. While those of us far removed from the damaged areas might be thinking "enough, I'm tired of hearing about this hurricane shit" there are people still having their lives dramatically altered daily as a result of the devestation. They can't just turn off the TV to get away from what has happened down there. I wish there was a way we could all pitch in for Cynter. I'd rather give to someone personally who could really use it than to trust some of these "charities" to do what is right. Even legit charities aren't equipped to deal with large influxes of money sometimes and end up blowing it. Remember the donations debacle from the terrorist attacks? Anyway, it would be nice if she could at least stay at a someone's house instead of in the stadium.

It's great that you've heard from her again!

While it's understandable that evacuating so many people at once is difficult, some of the snafus that are still going on really floor me.

I agree with rosebud. It would be nice if we could help Cynter directly. I am loosing trust in some of the “Charities” out there. I just heard about a Red Cross snafu that cost $7500.00. In a shelter in one of the hard hit southern states, hot meals were cooked to feed the people in other shelters and in some of the non-evacuated areas. After the food was cooked they realized they had no way to transport it and all the food had to be thrown out. I hope your friend gets to go home soon!
